10 coolest EV charging destinations for your next cross-country road trip

The American road trip has been reinventing itself since the Eisenhower Interstate System first stitched the country together, and the rise of electric vehicles has added a new chapter to that story. With more than 250,000 public chargers now accessible to GM EV drivers across North America, and GM’s investments in Pilot Flying J, EVgo, ChargePoint and IONNA adding over 4,533 DC fast charging stalls at 844 sites along major corridors, the days of anxiously hunting for a plug are fading fast.

What has emerged in their place is something rather more interesting: the charging stop as a destination in its own right. A 20 to 40 minute top-up is long enough to eat, explore, or simply enjoy somewhere you would never have pulled over in a gas car. These ten stations prove that the best EV road trip stops are the ones where the break is better than the driving.

1. Electrify America, Georgetown, Washington DC

Georgetown is one of those places that rewards aimless wandering. The cobblestone streets date back to the late 1700s, the Federal-style townhouses look like they belong on a postcard, and the Potomac River waterfront is a ten minute walk from virtually anywhere in the neighborhood. Electrify America’s DC fast charging station near Georgetown puts 150 to 350 kW at your disposal, which means a typical 10 to 80 percent charge takes around 30 minutes on a compatible vehicle. That is enough time to walk along the C&O Canal towpath, browse the boutiques on M Street, or grab a coffee at one of the independent cafes tucked behind the main drag. If you time it right, the Georgetown Waterfront Park offers one of the best sunset views in the capital, looking across the river towards Roosevelt Island.

2. EVgo, Sacramento, California

Sacramento does not always get the credit it deserves as a road trip stop, overshadowed by San Francisco to the west and Lake Tahoe to the east. This EVgo station sits in a strip mall that is anything but ordinary. The parking lot neighbors include a paintball gear shop, an anime souvenir store, and an art studio where you can book a drop-in session to make ceramics, sculptures, or mixed media pieces. EVgo’s fast chargers typically deliver up to 350 kW, so even a quick 20 minute session gives you a meaningful battery boost. Sacramento’s Old Town, with its wooden boardwalks and Gold Rush era buildings, is also only a short drive away if your charge time allows a detour. The city is the farm-to-fork capital of the United States, so if you are hungry, virtually any restaurant within a few miles will be sourcing produce from the Central Valley farms that surround the city.

3. IONNA Rechargery, Apex, North Carolina

Apex bills itself as “the peak of good living,” and the IONNA Rechargery station here is a strong argument for that claim. IONNA is the charging joint venture backed by seven major automakers including GM, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota, and its stations are built around ultrafast DC charging speeds that can add significant range in under 20 minutes. The problem, if you can call it one, is that the surrounding area deserves far more time than your battery needs. Downtown Apex is within walking distance: a compact, historic main street lined with independent restaurants, a craft brewery, and antique shops. There is a dog park for four-legged passengers and a skate park for anyone who packed a board. The town sits on the western edge of the Research Triangle, so you are also within easy reach of Raleigh and Durham if you want to extend the stop into a longer break.

4. Rocky Mountain Power by Electrify America, Moab, Utah

If there is a single charging station in the United States that could sell someone on an EV road trip, it might be this one. Moab sits at the doorstep of Arches National Park, where more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches rise from the red desert, and Canyonlands National Park is just down the road. The Electrify America DC fast chargers are positioned near the Moab Mountains, with trailheads, a boat launch on the Colorado River, and campgrounds all within minutes. The landscape is so visually arresting that simply standing next to your car while it charges feels like an event. Moab has been a mecca for off-road enthusiasts for decades thanks to trails like Hell’s Revenge and the Slickrock Bike Trail, and the town itself has grown into a proper outdoor recreation hub with gear shops, restaurants, and guided tour operators. Plan your charge for the morning and you can watch the sun hit the sandstone while your battery fills.

5. Pilot Travel Center, Chemult, Oregon

Chemult is a tiny community in the Cascade Range of southern Oregon, and the Pilot Travel Center here exists largely because of its proximity to Crater Lake National Park. The lake itself, formed in the caldera of a collapsed volcano, is the deepest in the United States at 1,943 feet and the blue of its water is so intense it looks digitally enhanced. GM Energy’s collaboration with Pilot Company and EVgo means the station offers DC fast charging alongside all the usual road trip amenities: food, restrooms, and a place to stretch. The drive from Chemult to Crater Lake’s Rim Village is around 45 minutes, so this is more of a staging point than a quick stop, but the hiking trails in the surrounding Deschutes National Forest start right from the road. If you are heading north towards Bend or south towards Klamath Falls, the Chemult station fills a critical gap in the Oregon charging network.

6. EVgo, East St. Louis, Illinois

The Gateway Arch has been a symbol of westward expansion since Eero Saarinen’s 630-foot stainless steel catenary curve was completed in 1965, and it remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the country. This EVgo station sits on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, which means you charge with a direct view of the Arch across the water. It is a genuinely impressive backdrop for a 20 minute stop. The Gateway Arch National Park on the Missouri side includes a museum, a tram ride to the top of the Arch (book tickets in advance, they sell out), and landscaped grounds designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh that run down to the riverfront. If you cross the Eads Bridge on foot, the walk takes around 15 minutes each way, leaving enough time to see the Arch up close and get back before your charge completes.

7. IONNA at Wawa, Daytona Beach, Florida

For anyone with even a passing interest in motorsport, Daytona Beach needs no introduction. The Daytona International Speedway hosts the Daytona 500 and the Rolex 24 Hours, two of the most famous races in American motor racing. The IONNA fast charging station at the nearby Wawa sits in a large modern shopping center directly across from the speedway, which makes it a natural pit stop in every sense. While your car charges, you can visit the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inside the speedway complex, which houses an extraordinary collection of race cars, memorabilia, and interactive exhibits spanning the full history of American racing. Track tours are also available and take you through the banked turns, pit lane, and Victory Lane. Daytona Beach itself stretches for 23 miles along the Atlantic coast, and the hard-packed sand that once hosted land speed record attempts is still drivable in certain sections, a novelty you will not find at many other beaches in the country.

8. ChargePoint, Austin, Texas

Austin’s ChargePoint station on Electric Drive (yes, that is the actual street name) puts you within walking distance of an improbable amount of activity. Mueller Lake Park is nearby, with walking and biking trails that wind around a spring-fed lake, and Downtown Austin is a short drive south. The city’s live music scene is legendary, with venues on Sixth Street and the Red River Cultural District hosting acts every night of the week. But the real draw at this particular stop might be the Congress Avenue Bridge, home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. Between March and November, roughly 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the bridge at dusk in a swirling column that darkens the sky. It is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in any American city, it is completely free, and it happens every single evening during the season. Time your charge for late afternoon and you have a front row seat.

9. ChargePoint, Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson sits in a valley flanked by the Teton Range to the west and the Gros Ventre Range to the east, and the scenery is so dramatic that the drive into town feels like the opening sequence of a film. The ChargePoint station in central Jackson puts you within walking distance of the ski lifts at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (consistently ranked among the best ski areas in North America), the famous antler arches on the town square, and a surprisingly deep selection of restaurants and galleries for a town of fewer than 11,000 people. In summer, the Jackson Hole Rodeo runs weekly performances that draw locals and visitors alike. The real draw, though, is positioning: Jackson is the southern gateway to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. A charge here sets you up for one of the most spectacular drives in the country, north through the Tetons on Highway 191 towards Old Faithful and the Yellowstone caldera.

10. EVgo, Portland, Maine

Portland, Maine has quietly become one of the great food cities in the northeastern United States, punching well above its weight with a restaurant scene driven by fresh Atlantic seafood and a fiercely local supply chain. This EVgo fast charger sits in the heart of the Old Port district, a compact waterfront neighborhood of brick warehouses converted into restaurants, galleries, and craft breweries. The lobster roll debate alone could occupy your entire charging session: Eventide Oyster Co. serves a brown butter version on a steamed bao bun, while the Highroller Lobster Co. food truck on the waterfront does a more traditional New England split-top roll. The Portland Museum of Art is a five minute walk and houses an impressive collection of American and European works, including pieces by Winslow Homer, who painted many of his most famous seascapes on the Maine coast just south of here. If coffee is more your speed, Portland has more craft roasters per capita than almost anywhere in the country. It is the kind of place where a 30 minute charge turns into two hours because you simply do not want to leave.

The common thread through all ten of these stops is that none of them feel like compromises. The old criticism of EV road trips was that charging was dead time, wasted minutes spent staring at a progress bar in a featureless parking lot. These stations flip that argument on its head. The forced pause becomes a reason to explore a neighborhood you would have driven straight through, eat at a restaurant you would never have found, or stand in front of a view you did not know existed. As the charging network continues to expand, the question is shifting from “can I make it?” to “where should I stop?” That is a much better question to be asking.
