Is a Porsche 911 GT3 RS too tame for your tastes? The $1.6 million GT3 R rennsport edition may be up your alley – but you’ll need a trailer to get it to the race track.

For drivers looking for an even more challenging and extreme machine to hone their skills, Porsche always has an answer.

If you need something more extreme than your road-going Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Porsche Motorsport offers the 911 GT3 R for customers to campaign in FIA GT3 competition events.

But if that’s not wild enough for your collection, the German sports-car brand has something even more special.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport (lower case ‘r’) was unveiled at the seventh running of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, one of the world’s largest Porsche enthusiast events.

Only 77 examples will be produced, each priced from the equivalent of $AU1.6 million at current exchange rates.

Based on the race-specification 911 GT3 R, the GT3 R rennsport features unique bodywork – only the bonnet and roof are carried over – with significant focus on aerodynamics.

There are no wing mirrors, replaced by subtle external cameras with in-cabin monitors, and to accommodate the wider front and rear track, the car utilises deconstructed wheel arches that feature carbon-fibre vanes on the outlet side.

Perhaps the most striking element is the enormous rear wing, said to have drawn inspiration from the infamous Brumos Porsche 935/77 endurance racer.

Powered by a naturally-aspirated 456kW (611hp) 4.2-litre ‘flat-six’ engine, the GT3 R rennsport produces about 10 per cent more power than the ‘regular’ GT3 R (416kW) – which moves it beyond the regulations for FIA GT3 racing – as well as the road-going GT3 RS (386kW).

However it’s still not as powerful as the 515kW twin-turbo 3.8-litre six-cylinder in the 991-series GT2 RS-based Porsche 935 (third image in the gallery above), which was Porsche’s last million-dollar 911 ‘track special’ unveiled at Rennsport Reunion 6 in 2018.

Thanks to new 18-inch BBS racing wheels, revised brakes and comprehensive use of carbon fibre, titanium and other lightweight materials, the car is expected to have a kerb weight of 1240kg, 10kg lighter than the FIA-sanctioned GT3 R.

Porsche Motorsport will offer the car in a selection of seven base colours and three livery options, and will supply the car with a standard performance and suspension setup that customers can tweak to their specific requirements.

The 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport is priced from $US1,046,000 ($AU1,613,000), with registrations of interest now open.
