Electric Honda NSX supercar may be previewed by upcoming concept

Acura – the US-focused luxury division of Japanese car giant Honda – has previewed a new electric supercar concept, known as the Electric Vision Design Study.

And it could serve as a loose preview of what to expect from the next-generation Honda NSX supercar, which is due by the end of this decade with electric power.

Reports earlier this year suggested Honda was preparing to show some form of sports car as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations this year, but it was not clear if it would be a concept or production vehicle.

The three teaser images show little of the design of the new sports-car concept, however they provide a glimpse of a sleek silhouette and distinctive front and rear LED light signatures.

After the original NSX was petrol-powered – and the second-generation model, introduced in 2017 and axed last year, was a hybrid – the next model has been hinted to be electric.

The Japanese car giant has previously shown plans for two electric sports cars by the end of the decade, including one with an NSX-like ‘mid-engined’ profile (below).

Acura boss Jon Ikeda said in an interview in 2021: “The first-gen was [petrol]. Second-gen was a hybrid. There’s going to be another one.”

In an interview last year, the executive said when asked if the next NSX would be battery-powered: “I would bet on it. It’s going to be electric.”

According to UK publication Autocar, Honda Europe vice president Tom Gardner reportedly told the outlet: “Watch this space: [2023 is] 75 years [of Honda]. We had the S2000 at 50. Who knows…”.
