Chevrolet Corvette Z06 power cut confirmed for Australia

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will produce less power in Australia than in the US, due to a new exhaust system with emissions-busting technology being fitted to locally-delivered examples.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will be sold in Australia with less power than US-delivered examples, documents filed with the Federal Government have confirmed.

As first reported by Drive in October 2022, Chevrolet – through its Australian distributor General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) – announced locally-delivered Corvette Z06s would not be fitted with the centre-mounted tailpipes found on US models.

Instead, Australia-bound Corvette Z06s will be equipped with a more conventional exhaust system with outboard tips, fitted with a petrol particulate filter (PPF) to meet European emissions standards and noise limits.

Documents published recently by the Department of Infrastructure show the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has received approval for sale in Australia by motor-vehicle regulators, with its 5.5-litre petrol V8 engine producing 475kW – down on the 500kW/624Nm outputs of US examples.

In Europe, this PPF-equipped engine tune develops 474kW and 595Nm.

The fitment of the quieter, emissions-busting exhaust in Australia may be needed to make the Corvette Z06 comply with local noise regulations.

The standard 6.2-litre Corvette Stingray in Australia uses a full-output engine tune shared with the US, rather than a detuned European tune with a petrol particulate filter – though ironically it was found to have fallen foul of local noise regulations last month, prompting a recall of 106 cars.

As previously reported, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is expected to be equipped as standard with a carbon-fibre-accented steering wheel, carbon-fibre shift paddles, microfibre interior accents, leather-wrapped interior door and instrument panels, and ‘GT2’ bucket seats with nappa leather upholstery.

Official pricing is yet to be confirmed, though using US prices and the top-of-the-range ‘3LT’ version of the standard Corvette Stingray as a guide, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 could cost approximately $AU300,000 plus on-road costs in Australia.

The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms towards the end of 2023 or early 2024.
