Final prices for the 2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport have been announced ahead of its Australian showroom arrival in September 2023.

The off-road flagship edition of Toyota’s top-selling ute will be priced from $73,990 plus on-road costs – $1000 less than the preliminary price guide distributed to dealers, as reported exclusively by Drive earlier this month.

Nonetheless it will still be the most expensive Toyota HiLux ever sold new in Australia, dearer than the current flagship, the $70,760 plus on-road costs HiLux Rogue – and the $64,990 plus on-road costs of the last high-performance HiLux edition, the TRD 4000SL supercharged V6 of 2009.

Once on-road costs are included – and the vehicle is on the road – the price is estimated to approach $80,000.

The HiLux GR Sport is powered by an uprated 165kW and 550Nm version of the familiar 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, matched with a retuned six-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive.

The braked tow rating of 3500kg is retained, but details of the payload capacity have not been confirmed. Dealers have been told the GR Sport is a claimed 0.6 seconds quicker from 0-100km/h than a HiLux SR5 – though it is still estimated to complete the run in about 10 seconds, four seconds slower than Ford Ranger Raptor twin-turbo petrol V6.

The GR Sport sits on the same broad footprint as the HiLux Rogue, with tracks wider by 135mm at the front and 155mm at the rear than a HiLux SR5, and an extra 15mm of ride height.

It gains new KYB monotube shock absorbers, retuned front coil and rear leaf spring tuning, 17-inch black wheels and 265/65 R17 Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tyres, while the rear sway bar has been deleted for improved wheel articulation.

The brake calipers – four pistons at the front and one piston at the rear, clamping 338x28mm front and 312x18mm rear discs – are finished in red. The upgrade to rear disc brakes – compared to drum brakes on the HiLux SR5 and cheaper models – is shared with the Rogue.

Visual highlights include a restyled front fascia with a new mesh grille, ‘TOYOTA’ lettering and a silver skid plate, black wheel-arch flares, 2mm-thick steel rock rails, red recovery points, a black rear bumper, and GR badging.

Inside, the GR Sport gains a GR-branded steering wheel with paddle shifters and a red centre stripe, new front sports seats with leather-accented and suede trim with grey stitching, red seat belts, aluminium pedals, ‘Technical Mesh’ dashboard inlays, a GR Sport gear selector, and all-weather floor mats.

Features carried across from the Rogue include a nine-speaker JBL sound system, 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry/start, autonomous emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

Five exterior colours will be available: Glacier White, Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Eclipse Black and Feverish Red. A black roof will be available with Glacier White, Frosted White and Feverish Red.

The 2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport is due in Australian showrooms in September.
