2024 SsangYong Musso and Rexton price and specs: New tech, more expensive

South Korean car maker SsangYong has updated its top sellers with new technology and off-road-themed model variants – but higher prices.

The 2024 SsangYong Musso ute and Rexton four-wheel-drive wagon have been updated in Australia, ahead of showroom arrivals before the end of this month.

Prices have increased by up to $2010 for the Model Year 2024 (MY24) Musso and Rexton line-ups, which introduce updated interiors, new features and claimed improvements to comfort and noise levels on the road.

Both vehicles continue with SsangYong badging, as in Australia the car maker is yet to adopt the KG Mobility branding it has moved to in its home market of South Korea.

An updated front fascia for the Musso (below) seen in previous overseas images will not come to Australia, as it is reserved for a special edition in South Korea – though there are new vertical LED fog lights on some models (above, South Korean specification).

New inside the Musso and Rexton is a restyled dashboard with a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen (up from 8.0 inches) with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via new USB-C ports.

The climate-control panel has been redesigned, with a mix of touch-sensitive and traditional push-down buttons in the Musso ELX, Adventure and Ultimate, or a “full touchscreen design” in the Musso Ultimate with Luxury Pack, and all Rextons.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster carries over, and is standard across both line-ups – making the Musso the only ute in the class with a full-width digital instrument screen as standard across the range.

SsangYong says new lower body to chassis mounts have been fitted to improve comfort over bumps.

Other new features for the Musso include a “soft opening and easy close” damped tailgate, claimed to reduce effort by 45 per cent – plus a more advanced keyless entry system for the Ultimate with a walk-away lock function, new LED fog lights on Adventure and Ultimate models, and new colours: Graphite grey for the Rexton, and Amazonian Green for the Musso.

New for both vehicles is an Adventure variant, positioned between the ELX and Ultimate variants – priced from $42,500 drive-away for the Musso, or $54,000 drive-away for the Rexton.

In the Musso, it adds 18-inch black wheels, coil-sprung rear suspension on both models, vertical-design LED fog lights, speed-sensitive power steering, reach adjustment for the steering wheel, leather-look faux seat trim, heated and cooled front seats, and tyre pressure monitoring.

Meanwhile the Rexton Adventure builds on the base ELX with a power tailgate, speed-sensitive power steering, leather-look seat trim, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seat, heated outboard second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, tyre pressure monitoring, a walk-up welcome system, and touch-sensing front door locks with walk-away locking.

Two body lengths for the Musso remain available – the regular size, and the long-wheelbase XLV – with coil-spring rear suspension on all models except the base ELX XLV.

There are no changes to the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine in both vehicles, which develops 133kW/420Nm in the Musso with a six-speed auto, and 148kW/441Nm in the Rexton with an eight-speed auto.

The six-speed manual transmission has been dropped from the Musso for 2024, as previously reported by Drive.

Safety has also not seen an upgrade. In the Musso, Australia continues to miss out on lane-keep assist, lane centring assist and braking functionality for the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems available overseas.

The ute is also one of the last new vehicles on sale with a two-point ‘lap’ seatbelt for the centre rear seat, rather than the three-point ‘lap sash’ belts in all other seating positions inside the vehicle.

The 2024 SsangYong Musso and Rexton are due in showrooms this month.
