The facelifted version of the heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pick-up – with a bold new look and more technology – is due in Australian showrooms a few months earlier than expected.

The updated 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD pick-up is due in local showrooms before the end of this year, a few months ahead of schedule.

The factory-backed distributor of Chevrolet vehicles in Australia – General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) – has published photos of the first updated, right-hand-drive “pilot” test-vehicle version of the Silverado HD to roll off its local re-manufacturing line in Victoria.

Prices and specifications for the updated Silverado HD will be announced closer to its showroom arrival due by the end of December 2023 – earlier than the January or February 2024 estimate that had previously been indicated.

However a price rise is expected. A similar update for the Silverado 1500 recently brought a $6010 price rise for the top-selling LTZ model grade.

The current-generation Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD – sold in Australia in 2500 form only, rather than the 3500 available in the US – was introduced in Australia in late 2021, and is priced from $163,000 plus on-road costs.

GMSV says the first right-hand-drive 2024 Silverado HD “pilot” test vehicle has returned from 5000km of testing in the Australian outback.

Unveiled in the US a year ago, the updated Silverado HD mirrors the 1500’s changes with a restyled front fascia, upgraded interior, and in the US, more powerful engines and new model grades.

The new front-end design introduces reshaped LED headlights with projector technology, and – in the Z71 specification shown in the Australian images – the axing of the ‘CHEVROLET’ script across the grille, in favour of a regular ‘bow-tie’ badge.

Inside, US models gain a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster – shared with the latest 1500, and up from an 8.0-inch touchscreen and semi-digital dials in the outgoing model.

The safety suite has been expanded to include adaptive cruise control overseas, in addition to autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring (with trailer detection) and rear cross-traffic alert.

In the US the 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 has been uprated to produce 350kW and 1322Nm (up from 332kW/1234Nm), with a claimed 25 per cent increase in torque available at low revs when climbing hills or towing.

It is matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

It is unclear if GMSV will introduce the off-road-oriented Silverado HD ZR2 available in the US – to match the smaller Silverado 1500 ZR2 – or if it will continue with one ‘LTZ Premium’ model grade, equipped with the Z71 black styling pack.

More details are due closer to the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD’s Australian arrival due later this year.
