The Jeep Grand Cherokee – and the seven-seat Grand Cherokee L – will be recalled in Australia after US road safety regulators discovered the SUV’s rear suspension could collapse while driving.

More than 2000 examples of the 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L have been recalled in Australia, following a widespread recall in the US because the SUV’s rear suspension could collapse while driving.

Overnight, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall notice for 331,401 examples of the Jeep Grand Cherokee – built between 2021 and 2023.

The NHTSA recall notice said the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s “rear coil springs may have been incorrectly installed and detach from the vehicle while driving”.

A spokesperson in Australia for Stellantis – Jeep’s parent company – confirmed 2052 examples of the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L sold locally are affected by the fault, though a recall notice is yet to be published on the Department of Infrastructure website.

In Australia, the recall affects WL74 and WL75-generation Jeep Grand Cherokees which are equipped with coil springs, not top-of-the-range variants with air suspension – such as the Grand Cherokee Overland and Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve.

Jeep Australia says affected Grand Cherokee owners will be notified when the recall remedy and parts are available through their local dealer.

The suspension recall has been issued less than 24 hours after 280 Jeep Grand Cherokees of the same generation were recalled for an unrelated steering fault in Australia.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing issue, the steering column shaft could separate from the U-joint. This may result in a loss of steering control.

“A loss of steering control could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

Owners have been advised to contact their nearest Jeep dealership to schedule an inspection and, if necessary, replace the immediate shaft and assembly parts, free of charge.

Alternatively, owners can contact Stellantis Australia by phone on 1800 870 714 or via email at [email protected] for more information about both recalls.
