Toyota Recalls 508,000 Camry Hybrids Over a Screen That Kills Your Turn Signals
A software bug in more than half a million Toyota Camry Hybrid sedans can wipe out the driver’s instrument screen at startup, and take the car’s turn signals and hazard lights down with it.
Toyota Motor North America has recalled 508,000 Camry Hybrid sedans under NHTSA campaign 26V511000 for a defect that can leave the 7-inch instrument cluster blank the moment the car starts. Toyota estimates that every recalled vehicle carries the flaw. Owner notification letters begin mailing September 21, 2026.
What Actually Fails
The recall covers 2025 and 2026 model year Camry Hybrid sedans built between August 2024 and June 2026, equipped with the smaller 7-inch instrument cluster Toyota calls a “combination meter.” Higher trims fitted with the larger 12.3-inch digital cluster sit outside the recall, and no other Toyota or Lexus model shares the affected software.
A failed startup sequence can leave the driver without a speedometer, fuel gauge or warning lights. The same software fault can also disable the hazard lights, turn signal lamps, seat belt warning system and smart key reminder, stripping away the exact tools a driver needs to signal a lane change or warn traffic behind a stalled car.
The failure touches four separate federal safety standards, according to Toyota’s recall filing with NHTSA: FMVSS 101 for controls and displays, FMVSS 108 for lighting, FMVSS 114 for the smart key reminder, and FMVSS 208 for the seat belt warning system. A single software bug reaching across four separate standards is unusual, and it explains why Toyota moved straight to a full recall rather than a smaller service campaign.
A Two-Year Search for the Cause
Toyota first heard about blank instrument clusters in July 2024. The automaker sent field-returned parts to its supplier, Visteon Corporation, which builds the clusters at a plant in Mexico. Visteon could not reproduce the fault in early bench testing.
Toyota and Visteon restarted the investigation in October 2025 after more reports arrived, and built special equipment to pull detailed data from affected vehicles. Bench testing in April 2026 still could not trigger the failure on its own. In June, the two companies moved testing onto an actual vehicle, and by late July they reproduced the blank-screen failure and confirmed it could also knock out the hazard lights and turn signals.
Toyota approved the recall on July 31, 2026, once the testing confirmed a safety defect existed.
How Common Is the Symptom
Toyota has not published a failure rate separate from its 100% defect estimate, a figure that reflects the software condition existing in every recalled vehicle rather than a prediction that every car will fail over its ownership period. The failure triggers unpredictably in the startup sequence. Some owners can drive for months without a blank screen, while others notice repeated failures within weeks of taking delivery.
Part of a Pattern in Supplier-Built Displays
This is not the first blank-cluster recall tied to a Visteon-built display. Ford recalled more than 355,000 F-series trucks in September 2025 for a similar failure, and Stellantis recalled 65,000 Ram trucks in April 2026 for a related instrument cluster fault. Modern dashboards pack the speedometer, turn signal indicators, seat belt chime and key reminder into one digital display run by a single piece of software, so one bug can now disable systems that used to run on separate, simpler circuits.
The Fix and the Timeline
Toyota dealers will update the instrument cluster software at no cost to owners. No over-the-air fix is available, so every affected Camry Hybrid needs a dealer visit. Notification letters begin mailing September 21, 2026, though owners do not need to wait for a letter to schedule service.

Toyota has generally moved faster than many rivals to trace supplier-linked software defects back to their source, as shown by the two years of testing that went into confirming this cluster fault, but the pace of recalls across the brand this year still reflects the same industry-wide pattern of shared electronics creating shared risk across multiple models.
If You Already Sold or Bought an Affected Camry Hybrid
A recall follows the vehicle, not the original owner, so a Camry Hybrid resold at any point after its August 2024 build date still qualifies for the free software update regardless of how many owners the car has had. Anyone who recently bought a 2025 or 2026 Camry Hybrid should check the VIN before assuming a prior owner already handled the recall. Toyota’s notification letters go out by registered address, and a new owner who has not updated their registration with the state may never receive one.

This recall lands in a year when the industry overall is setting records. More than 23 million vehicles were recalled nationwide in the first six months of 2026, more than double the total from the same period a year earlier, and electrical and software defects now account for close to half of all recall campaigns industry-wide.
