Volkswagen of America has revealed its 2027 model year lineup, and there are two stories that should grab the attention of anyone shopping a Volkswagen this fall. The first is a completely redesigned Atlas, which represents the biggest update to VW’s three-row family SUV since the original launched. The second is the return of the ID. Buzz electric microbus after a one-year hiatus, this time with a new Tourer trim built specifically for sleeping in.

Both are positioned as anchors of a 2027 range that introduces meaningful tech upgrades across the entire lineup, from new driver assistance features that can pull the car to the shoulder during a medical emergency to in-car gaming and ChatGPT-powered voice control. Select 2027 vehicles begin arriving in dealer showrooms in August, with the rest rolling out through early 2027.

The ID. Buzz Tourer Is Built for Sleeping In

The ID. Buzz returns for 2027 with four trims: Pro S RWD, the new Pro S 4Motion, the new Tourer 4Motion, and Pro S Plus 4Motion. The Tourer is the interesting one. It is built on the Pro S 4Motion platform and adopts what VW calls the European “Good Night Package,” which turns the electric microbus into a base camp on wheels.

Standard equipment on the Tourer includes a fold-out mattress with platform, window blinds for privacy, front window ventilation panels so you can sleep with the windows partly down without the rain getting in, and a portable exterior table and chairs for tailgate dinners. There is also dedicated Overnight Mode software that adapts the interior and exterior functionality so the vehicle is usable for overnight stays. Lighting, climate behaviour, charging logic and infotainment are all aware that you are sleeping in the cabin rather than driving it.

To support the camping use case, the Tourer also adds a retractable tow hitch, Captain’s Chairs in the front, an electrochromic smart roof that can be electronically dimmed, Area View 360-degree cameras for tight campsite manoeuvring, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black discs. It is a complete pop-up camper alternative built around an electric powertrain, which is something the US market has been waiting on since the original ID. Buzz concept first appeared.

All 2027 ID. Buzz models also get VW’s latest ID.S 6 software, an Android-based system that introduces a refreshed navigation home screen, faster input handling, and a new vehicle settings page. Buzz buyers get a one-year trial of In-Vehicle Premium, which now includes a new App Store with in-vehicle access to popular third-party apps including YouTube and Spotify directly on the dashboard screen. The ID. Buzz also features a North American Charging System adapter, giving owners access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and one-pedal driving functionality.

The color palette is being simplified. Only two-tone paint schemes will be offered for 2027, and a new Candy White over Cherry Red combination with white wheels intentionally evokes the iconic Type 2 Microbus color combination from the 1960s. The top trim adds an optional 21-inch wheel package for those who want more visual presence.

The All-New 2027 Atlas Gets a Complete Redesign

The seven-seat Atlas midsize SUV has been completely redesigned for 2027. This is the second-generation Atlas, and Volkswagen has used the rework to address everything that buyers consistently asked for in the original. Bolder exterior design, redesigned front and rear lighting, and a completely reimagined cabin with more modern design language and upscale materials are the headline changes.

New standard features include a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear Park Distance Control sensors. A new front centre airbag brings the total airbag count to seven, addressing a passive safety detail that was missing from the previous Atlas, and the new model includes refinements to VW’s standard IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology.

Under the hood, the 2027 Atlas is fitted with the latest evo5 version of Volkswagen’s EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which now produces 282 horsepower. That is the most ever for an Atlas, and Volkswagen expects this engine to deliver better fuel economy than the previous model as well. Final EPA-estimated figures will be released closer to launch. As before, the Atlas continues to offer both front-wheel drive and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

VW says detailed trims and pricing for the new Atlas will be revealed closer to its fall launch. The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, the more coupe-shaped two-row version, will be announced separately later in the year.

Tech Upgrades Across the Lineup

For 2027, Volkswagen is bundling its premium connected services into a single In-Vehicle Premium subscription. Depending on the model, this package includes Premium Navigation with real-time traffic and online points of interest, Premium Speech featuring ChatGPT integration, Premium Radio with access to more than 30,000 radio stations and over 1 million podcasts, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability, including a new App Store enabler for the ID. Buzz.

Four new features appear for the first time. myQ Connected Garage adds remote access to your home garage door directly through the vehicle touchscreen, voice command, geo-fencing or the myVW smartphone app. Travel Assist is being extended to the ID. Buzz with assisted lane changing and available road data. AirConsole turns the infotainment screen into a gaming platform that can pair with passenger smartphones for in-car multiplayer. And What3Words integration replaces complex GPS coordinates with simple three-word addresses for precise navigation to places that do not have a conventional street address.

Two of VW’s driver assist systems get meaningful enhancements on the Atlas, ID. Buzz, Golf family and Tiguan. Travel Assist now includes assisted lane changes with an “on hold” wait-for-clear function that holds the manoeuvre until traffic is safe, improved lane centering, and enhanced predictive Adaptive Cruise Control. Emergency Assist has also been upgraded so that it can now automatically move the vehicle to the right shoulder and bring it to a complete halt if it detects there is no driver interaction at the wheel, as in the case of a sudden medical emergency. That last feature is becoming the new bar for what counts as a serious driver assistance system, and VW joining the club is significant.

What Else Is Changing for 2027

The 2027 Golf GTI continues in S, SE and Autobahn trims, with Light Assist automatic high-beam adjustment and KESSY keyless access moving down to the base S trim, so even the cheapest GTI now gets two features that previously required an upgrade. The Golf R returns to two-trim availability with the Black Edition making a comeback. Black Edition features blacked-out emblems and accents, black brake calipers, wheels, exhaust tips and mirror caps, plus darkened headlamp housings. Both Golf R trims are available with the Euro Style Package, which deletes the sunroof and adds fabric ArtVelours sport seats and an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, shaving nearly 80 pounds from the kerb weight.

The ID.4 stays available through current 2026 model year inventory, which Volkswagen expects will support customer demand into 2027. A future version of the ID.4 is planned for the North American market, with details to be shared at a later date.

The Jetta and Jetta GLI continue with revised content. Jetta runs S, Sport, SE and SEL trims, and Jetta GLI is once again offered in a single fully loaded Autobahn trim. The S and Sport trims get the Composition Media infotainment system with satellite radio, voice control, two extra speakers for a total of six, plus available Premium Speech with AI and Premium Radio. KESSY keyless access and push-button start are now standard on S and Sport. All models have an enhanced rear seatbelt reminder.

The Taos compact SUV adds a new Sport trim that slots above the base model, with the trim lineup now running S, Sport, SE, SE Black Package and SEL. The Sport trim brings black 18-inch wheels, roof rails, spoiler and rear 4Motion badge, gloss black exterior mirror caps, gunmetal front bumper trim, rear skid plate and exhaust tips, plus yellow interior stitching, embossed black cloth seats and privacy glass. The S trim also gets a Composition Media upgrade with satellite radio, voice control and the option to add Premium Speech with AI and Premium Radio.

The Tiguan sees minimal changes. Trims continue as S, SE, SE R-Line Black and the SEL R-Line Turbo. The rear-view camera image quality has been improved across all models, the SEL R-Line Turbo’s Area View camera has also been upgraded, the heated steering wheel is now standard on the SE R-Line Black, and all trims now include the Auto Hold function for hill starts.

When to Expect Them in Showrooms

Select 2027 Volkswagen models are expected to begin arriving at US dealers in August, with the rest of the lineup launching through early 2027. Pricing for the headline new arrivals, the redesigned Atlas and the new ID. Buzz Tourer, will be revealed closer to those launches. For shoppers considering a Volkswagen this year, the practical takeaway is that waiting a few months for the 2027 models means access to the new connected services platform, the upgraded driver assistance suite, and either the all-new Atlas or the new sleep-in ID. Buzz Tourer, depending on whether you are family-hauling or weekend-escaping.
