Britain’s best fully electric and hybrid cars named at 2024 What Car? Electric Car Awards

The UK’s best electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars have been revealed at the 2024 What Car? Electric Car Awards, held in association with Pod Point.

Now in their fifth year, the awards were launched following a surge of interest in electric and hybrid cars on the What Car? website, and are designed to help people who are keen to buy an electrified car choose the right model for their needs.

The most successful brands in 2024 were BMW and Volkswagen, who each won five awards, while Mercedes-Benz was close behind with four.

BMW picked up Best electric estate (for the i5 eDrive40 Touring), Best electric luxury car (i7 eDrive50), Best used hybrid family SUV (X5 xDrive45e), Best used hybrid executive car (330e) and Best used electric performance car (i4 M50).

Meanwhile, Volkswagen won Best hybrid family car (Golf 1.5 eHybrid), Best hybrid estate (Passat 1.5 eHybrid), Best used electric family car (ID 3 58 kWh), Best used hybrid family car (Golf GTE) and Best used hybrid estate (Passat GTE).

The most affordable new electric or hybrid winner at the 2024 What Car? Electric Car Awards was the MG 4 EV SE, which costs £26,995, while the most expensive model was the BMW i7 eDrive50 Excellence, with a price tag of £101,765.

The Renault 4 electric SUV won the Reader Award, which was decided by a public vote on What Car?’s social media channels, with people asked to choose the upcoming electric model that they are most excited about from a 12-car shortlist.

What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars on offer has increased exponentially since we first held the What Car? Electric Car Awards in 2020. However, while this means there’s more chance of UK car buyers being able to have something that perfectly fits their needs, it can also make life horribly confusing, so these annual awards are more important than ever.”

James McKemey, head of external affairs for Pod Point, added: “As the case for electric cars and hybrids gets stronger every year, we believe it’s more important than ever to help drivers choose the right car for them – particularly if it’s their first EV. This celebration of the best EV models across a range of consumer categories fits ideally with our mission to make life with an EV easy and affordable for everyone. And with Pod Point being named Best Value Home EV Charger by What Car? in its most recent survey, we’re even prouder of our association with these awards.”
