Volvo EM90 people mover teased again ahead of November reveal

A series of images shared on social media offers a new sneak peek at the Swedish brand’s first people-mover, powered by batteries.

Volvo has teased more of its first-ever people mover, the electric Volvo EM90, which is due to be revealed on 12 November 2023.

The images of the EM90 – which will initially be exclusive to China, where luxury people movers are still popular – were shared by Volvo on a Facebook social media post.

While Volvo has not yet disclosed technical specifications, as previously reported by Drive, it is anticipated the EM90 will share its underpinnings and body structure with the electric Zeekr 009, a luxury six-seater people mover sold in China.

Both Zeekr and Volvo are owned by Geely, one of China’s largest car makers.

The twin-motor all-wheel-drive Zeekr 009 can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds, and uses a 140kWh battery for a claimed driving range of up to 822km on China’s lenient CLTC test cycle.

Volvo’s latest social media images blend a luxury home with elements of the EM90 that confirm the wheel design, rear LED tail-light signature and illuminated grille. The main images hints the EM90’s snub-nosed profile will match the Zeekr 009.

In a teaser video, Volvo provides a sneak peek at the interior of the EM90, with a pair of middle-row captain’s chairs accessed by sliding doors.

The door handles appear to be the same as the Zeekr 009.

Orders for the Volvo EM90 are set to open on the same day it’s unveiled, but initially it will be available only to customers in China.

It remains uncertain whether the EM90 will be offered in other markets. Given luxury people movers are niche offerings in Australia, a local launch appears less likely.

However, Australian buyers looking for a luxury people-mover will have the Lexus LM available to choose from later this year.

Priced from $160,888 plus on-road costs, the hybrid Lexus LM promises business class-like luxury and in top-specification LM500h guise (from $220,888 plus on-road costs) offers just four seats despite its long, boxy body.
