VFACTS: Chinese car sales continue to grow, MG ZS third-best seller overall in July 2023

The MG ZS small SUV from China has broken its sales record for the second month in a row – and placed third overall on the leaderboard – as sales of Chinese-made cars continue their ascent.

The MG ZS small SUV from China was the third best-selling vehicle in Australia last month – and set a new sales record with 3852 deliveries – as Australians continue to buy cars made in China in increasing numbers.

China remained this country’s third-largest source of new motor vehicles in July 2023, behind Japan and Thailand – after overtaking South Korea in September 2022, as well as Germany and the US in prior years.

In 2021 China was Australia’s fourth-largest source of new vehicles, ahead of sixth in 2020, eighth in 2019 and 12th in 2018.

Sales of Chinese-made cars tallied 15,853 in July 2023, up 130 per cent compared to the same month last year. They trailed vehicles from Japan (28,738) and Thailand (20,086) but were ahead of South Korea (13,469) and Germany (4796).

One in four Chinese-made vehicles reported as sold in Australia in July 2023 were an MG ZS small SUV – accounting for 3852 out of 15,853 Chinese-built cars – according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

It exceeds its previous best monthly sales of 3756 vehicles recorded the month before, June 2023 – when it beat its prior sales record of 3056 vehicles, set in December 2022.

The MG ZS recorded its second finish in third place on the overall new-car sales leaderboard – after achieving the same in December 2022 – and posted a 213 per cent increase in sales compared to July 2022.

The growth in sales of Chinese-built vehicles in Australia has been led by MG and LDV – both part of the state-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation – plus GWM (Great Wall Motors) Haval, and recently electric-car brand BYD.

But the second-biggest seller of Chinese-made cars in Australia is in fact US electric-car specialist Tesla, which reported 3934 vehicles as sold in July 2023, and 29,511 so far this year – ahead of 5347 MGs for the month, and 32,039 so far this year.

The year-to-date sales figures are up 16 per cent for MG, and 534 per cent for Tesla, as production delays due to COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai put the brakes on its deliveries in the first half of 2022.

MG and Tesla currently occupy seventh and eighth place on the year-to-date sales charts – the higher-placed brand up from 17th in 2020, 21st in 2019, and 30th in 2018.

Polestar electric cars, as well as certain models from Volvo and BMW are also built in China.

In the year-to-date sales race, GWM is placed 12th with 20,112 reported sales (up 80 per cent) – its top seller the Haval Jolion small SUV, with 6357 sales reported – ahead of LDV in 16th with 12,624 sales (up 50 per cent) and BYD in 21st with 7201 sales (deliveries began in September 2023).
