A flagship Mitsubishi Triton edition to sit above today’s top-of-the-range GSR is on Mitsubishi Australia’s wish list for the new model – and it could be built with former Holden Special Vehicles affiliate Walkinshaw.

The new Mitsubishi Triton range due in showrooms next year could expand to include a full-time rival for the Toyota HiLux Rogue and Nissan Navara Warrior, if Mitsubishi Australia gets its way.

Mitsubishi Australia says it sees an “opportunity” for a top-of-the-range version of the new Triton ute – due in local showrooms in February – to sit above the GSR, as a rival for the Toyota HiLux Rogue and Nissan Navara Warrior.

It says it is still deciding whether it would be developed in-house by Mitsubishi, or partner with former Holden Special Vehicles engineering firm Walkinshaw to continue the Xtreme – a limited-run special edition of the old Triton, due in showrooms later this year – into the new model.

“The current range of [Triton] vehicles that we have – GLX, GLX+, GLS, GSR – I do believe there is some opportunity at the top end of that to do something like Walkinshaw have done,” Mitsubishi Australia CEO Shaun Westcott told Australian media at the new Triton’s unveiling in Thailand.

“But whether we do that ourselves or whether we do that in a partnership, those are things that are under discussion with our parent company, because we do think there is space in the market for a product [of that type].”

Mitsubishi in Japan says a high-performance, factory-built Triton Ralliart – to rival the Ford Ranger Raptor – is under consideration, but is yet to publicly get the green light.

The Walkinshaw-designed Triton Xtreme – limited to 500 examples of the outgoing Triton, due in showrooms later this year – has the support of Mitsubishi Australia, and is sold through a selection of its dealerships.

However the Walkinshaw Automotive Group – the former HSV engineering company that also developed the Volkswagen Amarok W580 edition with VW Australia – pitched the project to Mitsubishi Australia, not the other way around.

The upgrades were designed and engineered by Walkinshaw – in partnership with companies such as V8 Supercars suspension supplier Supashock – and are fitted at its facility in Victoria before being shipped to dealers.

“Let me clarify, the Walkinshaw isn’t a partnership with us. Walkinshaw developed the product on their own, and they saw value in taking that step and developing that product,” Mr Westcott told Australian media.

“We think it’s a good idea. We’re not in partnership with them and they developed it on their own, but we think it’s a very good idea.”

Mitsubishi Australia’s solution may come in the form of the Triton Ralliart pitched by Mitsubishi head office in Japan.

Executives have said the Ralliart range could comprise multiple models – from a ‘sticker pack’ for regular variants, to a high-output Ford Ranger Raptor competitor – however Mitsubishi Australia would prefer the latter model.

Mr Westcott told media Mitsubishi Australia would not introduce a Ralliart model unless it brought a performance benefit to the vehicle – and not just an appearance package.
